A grand ceremony, the unveiling of the statue of Jason took place on Saturday, 1rsth of November 2025, on the waterfront of Volos. The statue was unveiled by the Minister of Health, Mr. Adonis Georgiadis, and was donated by the Dragnis family.
The ceremony was attended by, among others, Minister of Health Mr. Adonis Georgiadis, Archimandrite Epifanios Oikonomou, representing mr. Ignatios, Eminence of Dimitriados and Almyros and the Protopresbyter Theodoros Batakas, who together officiated the blessing of ceremony. Also in attendance were Vice Admiral Tryfon Kontizas, Commandant of the Hellenic Coast Guard, Zetta Makri and Christos Boukoros, members of Parliament in Magnesia, Anna- Maria Papadimitriou, Deputy Governor of Magnesia, Dimitris Eseridis, Mayor of Almyros and Konstantinos Karageorgiou, Mayor of Zagora–Mouresi, Elena Antonopoulou, Mayor for Culture of the Municipality of Volos, Meni Lazarou, Deputy Mayor for Tourism of the Municipality of Volos and multitude.
Chief Executive Officer of Volos Port Authority, mr Socrates Anagnostouemphasized he significance of the project for the identity and promotion of the city. As he noted, “Jason and the Argonaut Expedition should become Volos’ brand name, the city’s defining symbol. Along to the Museum of the Argo, we are strengthening a legend that is being brought to life and attracting visitors from around the world. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making this vision a reality, and, of course, to the donor, Mr. Paris Dragnis, for funding the project.” He also expressed his appreciation to all those who worked towards the completion of the project: architects and professors Theoklis Kanarelis and Kostas Manolidis, engineer Nikos Chatzinikolaou, who prepared the construction study, contractor Thanasis Papastamos, who oversaw the implementation of the designs, Mr. Babis Toutoutzoglou, for his contribution to the integration of the marble elements into the project and Spyros Fytilis, Director of Infrastructure Projects at the Volos Port Authority for coordinating and supervising the work.
The project was implemented with the support of the Volos Port Authority and the Region of Thessaly. Anna-Maria Papadimitriou, Deputy Regional Governor of Magnesia and the Sporades, noted: “The support of the Region of Thessaly was not merely symbolic, “The support of the Region of Thessaly was not merely symbolic".
Jason symbolises courage and an outward-looking spirit — qualities that also define Volos today.
The donor of the project, Mr. Paris Dragnis, expressed his emotion and satisfaction, noting, among other things: “It is a great honour for me and my family to have contributed to bringing this vision to life here in my homeland. Jason symbolises courage and an outward-looking spirit — qualities that also define Volos today. The statue is a first step, the next will be the establishment of our family foundation in the former Bank of Greece building, once the ongoing works are completed.”
The sculptor of the project, Mr. Achilleas Vasileiounoted, among other things: “The concept behind the sculpture captures the moment of Jason’s return from Colchis. It is a figure at rest after his adventures.”
Finally, Minister of Health Mr. Adonis Georgiadis , stating: “This place has a rich history and remarkable beauty. I have great admiration for Mr. Dragnis, whom I have known for many years, since 2011–2012, when I served as Minister of Shipping in the Papademos government. During that time, I came to appreciate the scale of his company’s success in the construction of luxury vessels, as well as his achievements in the wider maritime sector, and I developed great respect for his character and abilities. It is deeply meaningful that, no matter how far a person may rise, they never forget where they came from. Today, Mr. Dragniσ and his family are here to honour their place of origin through a generous and significant contribution. Volos is gaining a landmark that connects its past with its future.”
Mr. Georgiadis also emphasised the importance of harnessing the legend of the Argonaut Expedition to promote the city’s tourism and cultural development, recalling that, during his tenure as Minister of Development, he had contributed to securing the inclusion of the Argo Museum in the Public Investment Programme. He also expressed his hope that the Museum’s inauguration could take place in approximately a year and a half.
